Passing data from COBOL to JCL

Hello All,
My question to the forum is that I have to pass some data (a switch) to the JCL from COBOL program , how to achieve this without passing data to a file.
As we know we can pass the data to COBOL program from JCL using PARM, I am looking for similar solution, if possible.
Also based upon the data passed from COBOL to the JCL, I would be executing the next steps in the JCL.

Data from COBOL to JCL
The only way i know of doing this is through the return code.
ie.
Move 16 to return-code in you COBOL program that is returning control to the JCL Step will rresult in the step completing with a return code of 16.
In your JCL you would then have a cond statement examining the Steps return code or an if statement examining the return code.
