Moving spaces to numeric field

Can someone please let me know, how I can move spaces into a numeric field.
My program has a logic where I need to check the sign value of the numeric field of a file, if it is +ve move the value into file else move spaces into another file.

Do NOT move spaces to a field defined as numeric. Ever. You will cause many problems for the system. . .
If you need to compare a field for +/- and move spaces to some other field (alphanumeric) fine, but you should NOT corrput a numeric field for this. . .
